The public transportation system of Budapest is used by thousands of people every day. Many know today iconic yellow tram, the red trolleybuses and blue buses making the capital of Hungary a truly vivid city. Many of you might not know about the fact that Budapest has some extraordinary and also peculiar vehicles some other cities do not have. In this article, we would like to introduce you to some of these vehicles you must try someday.
First, we have the cogwheel railway, a hidden treasure of Budapest that has been taking passengers up to Széchenyi Hill for almost 120 years. The first train set out on its journey on June 24, 1874, between Városmajor and Sváb Hill stations (expanded to Széchenyi Hill in 1890). The railway got its name from running on three tracks as it has a cogwheel in the middle that helps every red-coloured train to climb up on the hill.
Many of you might have seen old, yellow trams but never travelled with one. In October you have the opportunity, as Budapest runs its annual Danube Heritage trams when old-fashioned vehicles from the 19th and 20th century conquer tram line 2 next to the river Danube.
